Martin Leung-Wai is an architectural graduate passionate about community and Pacific design. He is a multi-talented artist with broad creative skills in painting, drawing, interactive media and model making. He was a finalist for the NZIA Student Design Awards in 2010. His final year project and thesis was a community centre in Manukau City based on the ideas of the Taualuga (traditional dance) and Samoan spatial organisation (based on the layout of villages). Martin is a Director of Creative Native Ltd focusing on Indigenous architecture and design. He also tutors at UNITEC School of Architecture and is a member of Nga Aho, a Maori Creative Professionals networks. Martin has had the opportunity to facilitate youth programmes and Pacific leadership fono at Unitec.
Waikare Komene, Nga Puhi & Ngati Kahungungu, is the other Director of Creative Native Ltd. He has had considerable experience in the design field and has completed a Masters in Architecture. Since 2003 he has worked for Studio Pasifika as an Architect, Project Manager, Designer, 3D Modeler. Komene has also worked a range of Maori organisations on diverse projects including: Maori Television in Newmarket, Te Puia – NZ Maori Arts & Crafts Institute in Rotorua, Te Rerenga Wairua up at the cape, and currently Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi, Maori University Institute in Whakatane.
